The global race to build AI infrastructure is putting unprecedented pressure on the technology supply chain. GPUs, high-performance storage and server components are all feeling the impact.
But right now, one component is causing particular concern: RAM.
Memory prices are rising rapidly and it’s already starting to show up in infrastructure quotes. We’re seeing cases where the memory component is being priced separately and at a significant premium, meaning what looks like a standard infrastructure refresh suddenly comes with a much higher cost than expected.
IT distributors are now warning that memory shortages and supply chain strains are actively impacting the channel, and these pressures are unlikely to ease in the near term.
This isn’t a short-term fluctuation. It reflects a broader shift in how the world is consuming technology. AI infrastructure is absorbing enormous amounts of compute and memory capacity and that demand is reshaping hardware pricing across the industry.
Not every vendor has handled this situation particularly well. Some have moved quickly and quietly, leaving partners and customers with little time to respond.
IBM has taken a different approach.
They have been transparent about upcoming price increases across their hardware portfolio, including storage and Power systems, and have given partners and customers advance notice before those changes take effect.
That transparency creates a small but important window of opportunity. Current IBM pricing remains in place until the end of March, after which increases will come into force across the board.
Quotes issued under the IBM Value Seller programme will expire on 31st March.
If your organisation has hardware investments planned, whether that’s:
• IBM Power systems
• Storage infrastructure
• A wider infrastructure refresh
…the coming weeks may represent the most cost-effective moment to commit.
If memory is part of the configuration, the urgency is even greater. RAM costs are moving quickly, and waiting may mean paying significantly more for the same infrastructure.
IBM’s advance notice provides a finite opportunity to secure current pricing before market pressures fully take effect.
Rest assured we’re not trying to create urgency for its own sake we simply want to ensure customers are aware of what’s happening in the market.
If you’re:
• Finalising an infrastructure design
• Planning a refresh of ageing systems
• Assessing IBM Power or storage options
• Or evaluating how rising memory costs may affect your roadmap
we’d be happy to help you explore the options.
There may be more flexibility available than you realise, and we can help you navigate the changes without unnecessary cost or risk.
