Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant ambition for the public sector, it is happening now. Across government departments, healthcare bodies and local authorities, organisations are moving past experimentation and beginning to deploy AI solutions that deliver tangible, measurable results.
In partnership with IBM and GovNews, we recently brought together a panel of senior public sector leaders to explore one of the most pressing questions facing the sector today: how do you bridge the gap between AI strategy and operational reality?
The webinar featured contributions from leaders across the Department for Work and Pensions, Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex, Leeds City Council, Celerity and IBM, each bringing practical experience of what it takes to make AI work in complex, high-stakes environments.
The conversation went well beyond technology. Panellists shared candid perspectives on the organisational, cultural and governance challenges that determine whether AI initiatives succeed or stall. Topics included how to move AI projects from isolated pilots into scalable, enterprise-wide deployments, and where AI agents and automation are already supporting both front-line and back-office functions today.
A recurring theme was the importance of delivering measurable productivity gains without losing the human oversight that public services demand. The panel discussed practical approaches to building AI literacy across organisations, establishing the right governance and guardrails, and overcoming the cultural resistance that often slows adoption.
Crucially, the discussion reinforced that successful AI adoption is not simply a technology challenge. It is about trust, workforce engagement and ensuring AI is introduced in ways that genuinely support staff and improve outcomes for citizens.
